The Story Behind Fabric Alchemy

MAHDIYYAH is a regenerative education and sustainability services studio that uses textiles as a medium to explore circular design, systems thinking, and community-centered practices.

Founded by Mahdiyyah Muhammad, the studio builds on over a decade of experience in sustainable fashion, evolving from zero-waste garment design into a multidisciplinary practice rooted in education, consulting, and experiential programming. What began as a focus on upcycled apparel made from discarded materials has expanded into a broader commitment to transforming how individuals and organizations understand and engage with textile waste.

At the core of the studio is Fabric Alchemy, a framework that reframes post-consumer textile waste as valuable resources and guides schools, brands, and institutions in rethinking materials, labor, and life-cycle impact. Through this approach, Mahdiyyah designs and delivers regenerative sustainability programs, workshops, brand activations and consulting services that use hands-on making as an entry point into environmental awareness, creative problem-solving, and circular systems.

Rooted in Ancestral African and Indigenous traditions of repair, reuse, and collective making, the work centers a cyclical relationship with materials, one that prioritizes environmental stewardship, cultural knowledge, and community care.
